Our Story

In 2023 three members of the Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN) decided to work together to grow their reach and impact. The Gum Tree Foundation, Rendere Environmental Trust and Upotipotpon Foundation were strongly committed to stepping up their nature giving and realised the potential of deepening and formalising close working arrangements.

Established as a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2024, Nature Impact Collective is an environmental charity overseen by a member-elected board. We have a small team of personnel to support our collective giving processes and promote our work. In September we welcomed our fourth member and we look forward to welcoming more values-aligned members in future.

Nature Impact Collective is a member of the AEGN, and the network is an ongoing source of inspiration and support to us.

Members

Rendere Environmental Trust

“I’ve always had a deep love of the natural world and from a young age I realised that protecting it requires collective effort. I believe that by building partnerships and collaborating with other funders, we can achieve even greater impact.

Our most critical investment is the planet that we all depend on. We’ve only got one Earth, and Rendere is wholly committed to its protection and restoration. Rendere is strategically focussed on spending down by 2030. Partnership with Nature Impact Collective will amplify our impact for nature in this critical decade.”

Jim Phillipson, Rendere Environmental Trust

Gumtree Foundation

“Nature inspires and provides for us, yet it is greatly underappreciated. To encourage a deeper connection to the environment and support its preservation, restoration and enhancement, we are committed to significantly growing the size and effectiveness of our nature funding this decade and beyond.

We jumped at the opportunity to partner with funders with similar goals. Working together allows us to achieve more than we could alone. By building deeper relationships, pooling resources, and sharing information, we can have a more meaningful impact and learn a lot along the way.”

Pademelon Fund

“We created the Pademelon Fund because we are passionate about making a difference and improving the state of our natural environment, ecosystems and climate. It is the collective responsibility of philanthropic giving to support these often under-resourced and overlooked areas. By focusing our philanthropic efforts on environmental conservation, we can help drive positive change and inspire others to invest in protecting the planet for future generations.”

Rachel Honnery and Michael Cahill
Pademelon Fund Founders

Rachel Honnery has a Master of Fine Arts at the University of NSW. Her art practice is multi-disciplinary and engages dialogues about the future of landscapes, eco-systems and her relationship to her autoimmune disease.

Michael Cahill is a tech leader and entrepreneur, best known for co-founding WiredTiger. He’s also active in the startup world as a founder, angel investor, and advisor, mentoring early-stage entrepreneurs. Michael is committed to supporting NGOs that work to protect the environment.

Upotipotpon Foundation

“As our understanding of the critical importance of nature and environmental conservation deepened, we have significantly increased our commitment to funding environmental repair and nature initiatives. The Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network has introduced us to experienced philanthropists in this space, making this journey both rewarding and enlightening. As a result, we have committed to giving three times more for the environment than we initially planned.

It is our priority to enhance our impact and effectiveness as funders while enjoying the process of giving. The Nature Impact Collective has provided us with this opportunity—allowing us to connect with like-minded funders, integrate learning and strategy into our philanthropic efforts, and ultimately make informed choices for nature with Nature Impact Collective members..

We are excited about the path ahead and remain dedicated to supporting initiatives that protect and restore our natural world.”

Dawn Wade Foundation

“The Wade family recognises that we have been more fortunate than most in both life and business. So we at the Dawn Wade Foundation are committed to using the proceeds of business to assist both people and the planet.

Our giving is in four key areas. Firstly, the Geelong region in southern Australia. This is where Dawn and John Wade started a family and several successful businesses, and also an area where much inequality and hardship still exist. Our second focus is education, because that is the ultimate transformative tool for any individual, family and society. Thirdly, we focus on international development because on founding Intrepid Travel, Darrell and Anna Wade recognised the incredible disparity in opportunity that people have, depending on the luck of where you are born.

Our final focus is on the environment, because ultimately that is the thing that nurtures us all, and the thing that too often we don’t respect in return. For us, Nature Impact Collective is an ideal way to leverage a small community of very knowledgeable and committed environmental philanthropists to have greater impact. We’re thrilled to be involved!”
